Blinds & Shades Buyer’s Guide

 Window Blinds

Blinds and shades are two popular window treatments that can block light, provide privacy and keep your home cool, all while adding a subtle design element.

You’ll likely encounter several different styles when you shop for this kind of decor. To help make your search a bit easier, peruse the blinds and shades below to select the right ones for your space!

Types of Blinds

Venetian Blinds

These blinds are made of flat horizontal slats and are what most people think of when they imagine blinds. They’re a great choice for any space, as the adjustable slats can be angled to manage light levels and give you privacy. In terms of style and construction, venetian blinds come in various widths and finishes of wood, metal and plastic.

Honeycomb Blinds

Honeycomb blinds, also known as cellular shades, are made of a thin, light textile fashioned in a honeycomb pattern. This design provides a minimalist look, as it is not divided by slats and the thin material makes even an entire blind panel incredibly compact when closed. Honeycomb blinds are not as good at fully blocking out light, but they offer great privacy and are able to softly diffuse light for a relaxing ambiance.

Vertical Blinds

These blinds consist of wider plastic slats vertically suspended by their tops. This configuration allows for a lot of flexibility in access to the full height of the window as needed, making vertical blinds ideal for sliding doors or particularly wide windows.

Types of Shades

While they serve the same purpose as blinds, shades differ in their construction, consisting of solid panels of material rather than a collection of slats. Window shades come in three main types:

Roman Shades

These are structured fabric shades that are designed to neatly fold up in sections when opened. Roman shades are often considered one of the more stylish options of blinds and shades as they come in a wide range of fabrics that can exude an elegant and sumptuous appearance.

Privacy Panels

This type of window covering is a unique configuration that is a cross between curtains and vertical blinds. With wide fabric panels that can slide in or out of place as needed, and a range of material options from opaque to thick fabric, privacy panels are a versatile and attractive solution.

Roller Shades

Convenient, effective and unfussy, roller shades are a great addition to any space. When not in use they neatly retract up and out of the way, so they are a great option for those who prefer unobtrusive window treatments. The housing for most roller shades is small enough that it can be covered by a valance or curtains, and they come in a variety of designs; blackout material, for example, will keep out all light, while solar shades can block brightness and glare without obscuring the view.
