A coat rack is a classic addition to foyers, entryways and mudrooms, greeting all who enter with the perfect place to hang their bags and outerwear. However, selecting the ideal one for your space can be a bit of a challenge.

To help make the process a bit easier, read on to learn everything you need to know before you choose a coat rack.

If you’re looking to add a coat rack to your home, the first step is deciding what you would like your coat rack to do. This may sound basic, but there are a range of configurations and features that can work better for different spaces. Keep an eye out for these features included in many coat racks:

  • Storage – you’ll find a wide variety of coat rack storage, from simple shelving or cubbies to shoe racks and internal compartments, that store just about anything you’d need by the door.
  • An Umbrella Stand - a natural addition that offers a designated spot to stow drippy rain gear before it can make a mess in your home.
  • Seating - a convenient amenity by the door, offering the perfect spot to sit and tie your shoes.
  • A Mirror – this extra makes it easy to do a quick check on the way out, and make sure you’re looking your best!
  • A Message Board - this offers an ideal spot for reminders, helping you keep track of schedules, remember important items, or remind family members of things before anyone gets out the door.

Coat Rack Features

Once you’ve decided on your coat rack’s functionality, it’s time to explore the different configurations that can provide those features. Coat racks come in three main types: free standing, wall mounted and over the door.

Check out these options to decide what works best in your home!

Free Standing Coat Racks

Free standing coat racks are a common option that can be placed almost anywhere. There are three main styles:

Coat trees are a quintessential coat rack, beautiful in their simplicity and functionality. Traditionally these consist of a vertical central pole that offers pegs or hooks on which to hang your bags or coats. However, more modern iterations have also explored other silhouettes with varied support structures that still maintain the same general shape and utility.

Hall trees are far more than just coat racks. These larger installations offer seating, storage and hooks that keep your entryway organized and your outerwear stowed in a convenient spot. Although their size can be a deterrent for some homes, hall trees are ideal for use in mudrooms and large foyers where they can provide organization and convenience for the entire family.

Garment racks are a versatile option that furnishes your foyer with a closet rod so that you can hang your coat on a hanger when you come in the door. These are typically large enough to hold quite a few coats, hats, and other accessories and may incorporate low shelves for shoe storage.

Types of Free Standing Coat Racks

Wall Mounted Coat Racks

Wall mounted coat racks are less substantial additions that clear up floor space while still addressing the same need. These also come in a few variations:

Individual hooks are a great solution if you don’t like a lot of clutter by the door. They allow you to add the exact amount of storage you need and are great for assigning spaces for different family members to use.

A mounted row of hooks can provide a generous amount of hook storage with a clean, cohesive look. This type of wall mounted coat rack frequently features a shelf directly above the hooks to get the most utility out of the installation.

Wall mounted garment racks are a solution that can offer a larger amount of coat storage without taking up any floor space. However, these will need to be placed in wider spaces, as they do project from the wall a fair bit.

Over the Door Coat Racks

Over the door coat racks feature flat low-profile supports that hang over the top of a door while still allowing it to close. This makes them easy to install or relocate without making any holes in the wall. Over-the-door-coat racks are particularly convenient for small spaces and homes with variable storage needs.
